Planning a trip from Marrakech to Merzouga? Here is everything you need to know.
Merzouga, on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is the most popular place to experience the Sahara in Morocco. If you are starting in Marrakech, the first thing to understand is that it is a long way: around 560 km by road, crossing the High Atlas. This guide explains the route, how long the drive really takes and how many days you should plan.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?
The road distance is roughly 560 km. Without stops the drive takes about 9 to 10 hours, because the road climbs over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) and then follows the valleys of the south. Nobody does it in one go on a tour: the trip is always split over two days, with a night in the Dades Valley on the way.
The classic route, day by day
Day 1: Marrakech, Tizi n’Tichka, Ait Ben Haddou, Dades Valley
You leave Marrakech in the morning and climb into the High Atlas, with photo stops at Berber villages and at the pass. The highlight of the day is the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a famous film location. In the afternoon you pass Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses and sleep in the Dades Valley.
Day 2: Todra Gorge to the dunes of Merzouga
After breakfast you walk through the Todra Gorge, one of the most spectacular canyons in Morocco, then drive through palm groves and desert villages to Merzouga. In the late afternoon you ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes to watch the sunset and spend the night in a desert camp with dinner and Berber music.
Day 3: sunrise and the way back (or on to Fes)
You wake up early for the sunrise over the dunes, ride back to Merzouga and have breakfast. From here you can either return to Marrakech or continue north to Fes through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and Ifrane, which avoids driving the same road twice.
How many days do you need?
| Length | Best for | Our tour |
|---|---|---|
| 2 days | Short on time. You will reach the smaller Zagora desert, not Merzouga. | 2 Day Zagora desert trip |
| 3 days | The most popular choice. One night in the dunes of Merzouga. | 3 days Marrakech to Merzouga or 3 days Marrakech to Fes |
| 4 to 5 days | A slower pace, a full day in the Sahara and the Draa Valley on the way back. | 5 day Marrakech desert tour |
Three days is enough for most travellers, and it is the shortest trip that really reaches Merzouga. If you want to avoid long days in the car, or you would like time to visit nomad families and the village of Khamlia, choose four or five days.
Marrakech to Merzouga or Marrakech to Fes?
If you continue your trip in the north of Morocco, ending in Fes is the smarter option: you see different landscapes on the way out and no road is repeated. If your flight leaves from Marrakech, choose the round trip.

Tips before you go
- Bring layers: the desert is hot in the day and cold at night, especially from November to February.
- Take a small bag for the night in the camp; the big luggage stays in the vehicle.
- Carry some cash for drinks, lunches and tips.
- Book a few days ahead in spring and autumn, the busiest seasons.
