Best time to visit the Sahara desert in Morocco: a month-by-month guide

Best time to visit the Sahara desert in Morocco: a month-by-month guide

When is the best time to visit the Sahara? Also, it depends on how you handle heat and cold.

You can visit the Sahara in Morocco all year round, and we run desert tours every month. But the season changes the experience a lot: the heat of the day, the cold of the night and how comfortable the long drives feel. Here is what to expect.

The short answer

In addition, the most comfortable months are March to May and September to November. Days are warm, nights are cool and the light over the dunes is beautiful. These are also the busiest months, so it is worth booking a little earlier.

Season by season

Spring (March to May)

Pleasant days and fresh nights. Spring is ideal for the camel ride and for walking in the dunes. Occasional sand winds are possible, especially in March and April.

Summer (June to August)

Very hot. Around Merzouga, daytime temperatures often go above 40 °C. Tours still run, but the camel rides happen at sunset and sunrise, when it is cooler, and the middle of the day is spent in the shade or in the vehicle. Drink a lot of water and protect yourself from the sun.

Autumn (September to November)

Probably the best season. The heat drops, the skies are clear and the nights in the camp are pleasant. The date harvest in the oases also starts in autumn.

Winter (December to February)

Sunny and mild during the day, but the nights in the desert are cold and can get close to freezing. The camps provide heavy blankets. Snow is possible on the High Atlas passes, which can occasionally slow down the drive from Marrakech.

Quick overview

Months Days Nights in the desert Our advice
March to May Warm Cool Excellent
June to August Very hot Warm Fine with an early start
September to November Warm Pleasant Excellent
December to February Mild and sunny Cold Good, bring warm clothes

Which tour for which season?

In summer, a shorter trip like the 3 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga or the 3 day tour from Fes to Marrakech keeps the hot hours to a minimum. Besides, in spring and autumn, a 4 day tour lets you enjoy a full day in the desert at a relaxed pace.

Sunrise and sunset

Whatever the month, the best moments in the Sahara are sunset on the camel ride and sunrise from the top of a dune. Our guides plan the day around them, so you do not need to worry about the timing.
